E-Safety  

The internet is such an integral part of children's lives these days. It opens up so many educational and social opportunities, giving them access to, quite literally, a world of information and experiences.

Whether on a computer at school, a laptop at home, a games console or mobile phone, children and young people are increasingly accessing the internet whenever they can and wherever they are.

As you would protect your child in the real world, you will want to make sure that they are safe whatever they are doing. Like learning to cross the road, online safety skills are skills for life. If your child understands the risks and can make sensible and informed choices online, they can get the most from the internet and stay safe whilst doing so – particularly from those people who might seek them out to harm them.   Research by Ofcom shows that 78% of 5-7 year olds are now using the internet*, so learning about online safety is as integral as learning to cross the road.   Within the UK, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre, the national Centre for child protection, spearheads activities and launches resources to raise awareness and empower children and young people.   Throughout Europe, schools, local authorities, safeguarding children’s boards and the police all work together to raise awareness of online safety.

The Know IT All for Parents and Carers presentation highlights the gap that exists between children’s real experience online and adult awareness of these experiences. The presentation contains information about positive ways young people are using different technologies, what the risks are to users and it outlines practical advice in avoiding or minimising risks when using online and mobile technologies.

  At Thorpe Greenways Infant School, in line with current e-safety guidelines, we use monitoring software on all school machines to help to keep pupils and staff safe when using our computers and the internet. All pupils & staff are reminded of their Acceptable Use Policy each time they log on to school computers and will be required to accept the policy if they choose to continue using the equipment. The software allows transparent analysing, management and reporting of inappropriate 'traffic' flowing to or from the school computers and automatically monitors all screen content and keyboard activity. Whenever a violation is triggered, or an attempt to access a forbidden file or URL, the screen is automatically captured.
